Community lunch – bringing people together

Once upon a time our ancestors would gather around a roaring fire to share meals, discuss community news, laugh together and mourn together. Throughout history, communal meals have been an essential part of our day-to-day lives, a tradition that is becoming increasingly less common to the detriment of our health and wellbeing.

Sharing meals with others is linked to a broad range of positive outcomes, from helping our children to develop social skills to help older adults stave off cognitive decline. Social isolation has been identified as a major health concern, with 1 in 4 Australians reporting feeling lonely. This sense of loneliness has been linked to a poorer quality of life overall, as well as high blood pressure, weakened immune systems and negative mental health outcomes.

With this in mind, Cire was proud to host a Community Lunch on 12 September 2019 at our Chirnside Park Community Hub, attracting visitors from throughout our region. Guests from ages three to ninety-three feasted on Italian food prepared by Cire’s Chirnside Park team, all set to the gentle strains of Pavarotti. We served spaghetti bolognese and garlic bread with Jenelle’s famous Mars Bar slice to finish (which was raved about by all!). The delicious meal was accompanied by soft drink, tea and coffee and cost each guest a gold coin donation.

Judging by the laughter erupting at our communal tables, and the overwhelmingly positive feedback from diners, our Community Lunch was a huge success! Cire is hoping to host more meals throughout 2020- and beyond- so please make sure to follow our Cire Facebook page or pop into your local Community Hub for details of our future events.

Grazie mille to all the guests who joined us on 12 September, we loved hosting you and hope to see you again soon!
